E / There‘s always something going on in Neukölln. Neukölln is in the headlines. It‘s not always good news. No one would describe Neukölln as quiet.

In the summer of 2023, I drew and watercoloured on the streets of Neukölln, especially on Sonnenallee and Karl-Marx-Straße. When I sit on my painter‘s stool, draw on the spot and watercolour some details, peace returns. The babble of voices and the sounds of the cars become a steady murmur, and where I used to see movement, there now seems to be stillness. I notice all the details that I usually tend to overlook. There really are places of calm.

A cyclist rests on a bench on the square in front of the town hall. A sports car seeks shelter behind a sign indicating a building project. The long shadows of the bollards look like a painting by Edward Hopper. The rubbish bin speaks to me. The busts of ladies under their wigs stare silently ahead. The traffic seems to be at a standstill. „Organise class struggle“ is written on a wall, but nothing is happening in front of it. Neukölln is quiet. You just have to look carefully.

Matthias Beckmann was born in Arnsberg in 1965 and lives as a draughtsman in Berlin. He studied at the art academies in Düsseldorf and Stuttgart. Matthias Beckmann draws in front of the motif, without photographic aids, without preparatory sketches and without corrections. His artistic work has been supported by a working scholarship from the Kunstfonds Bonn and a scholarship from the Künstlerhäuser Worpswede, among others. In 2022 he was in Bangalore on a scholarship from the Goethe-Institut. Matthias Beckmann‘s works can be found in many graphic art collections, including in Berlin, Bonn, Bremen, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Duisburg, Oberhausen and Wuppertal.

D / In Neukölln ist immer etwas los. Neukölln ist in den Schlagzeilen. Es sind nicht immer gute Nachrichten. Niemand würde Neukölln als ruhig bezeichnen.

Im Sommer 2023 habe ich auf den Straßen Neuköllns gezeichnet und aquarelliert, vor allem auf der Sonnenallee und auf der Karl-Marx-Straße. Wenn ich auf meinem Malerhocker sitze, vor Ort zeichne und einige Details aquarelliere, kehrt Ruhe ein. Das Stimmengewirr und die Geräusche der Autos werden zu einem gleichmäßigen Rauschen, und da, wo ich bisher Bewegung sah, scheint es nun Stillstand zu geben. Ich nehme all die Details wahr, die ich sonst gerne übersehe. Es gibt tatsächlich Orte der Ruhe.

Auf dem Platz vor dem Rathaus ruht ein Radfahrer auf einer Bank aus. Ein Sportwagen sucht Schutz hinter einem Schild, das auf ein Bauvorhaben hinweist. Die langen Schatten der Poller sehen aus wie auf einem Gemälde von Edward Hopper. Der Mülleimer spricht mit mir. Die Damenbüsten unter ihren Perücken schauen stumm vor sich hin. Der Verkehr scheint zu ruhen. An einer Wand steht „Klassenkampf organisieren“, doch davor geschieht nichts. Neukölln ist ruhig. Man muss nur richtig hinsehen.

Matthias Beckmann wurde 1965 in Arnsberg geboren und lebt als Zeichner in Berlin. Er hat an den Kunstakademien in Düsseldorf und Stuttgart studiert. Matthias Beckmann zeichnet vor dem Motiv, ohne fotografische Hilfsmittel, ohne vorbereitende Skizzen und ohne Korrekturen. Seine künstlerische Arbeit wurde u.a. gefördert durch ein Arbeitsstipendium des Kunstfonds Bonn und ein Stipendium der Künstlerhäuser Worpswede. 2022 war er mit einem Stipendium des Goethe-Instituts in Bangalore. Matthias Beckmanns Werke befinden sich in vielen grafischen Sammlungen, u.a. in Berlin, Bonn, Bremen, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Duisburg, Oberhausen und Wuppertal.
