E / Urban silence, that is primarily a relative silence: The silence after the U-Bahn entered the station, the silence in a courtyard, the silence at 4 am when everybody is still fast asleep. But generally speaking it is the silence in the absence of noise.

Project 140 dB (i.e. 140 Decibels, the volume of an aero engine in short distance) is strongly connected to Tempelhofer Feld, the former airport Berlin THF, that influenced Neukölln considerably for decades. For in this place the lively background noise, a mixture of music, chatter, wind and the chirping of the field larks, feels like utter silence to the Berliner who still remembers the deafening engine noise at take-off and even the rattling of the furniture and the trembling of the window panes in the adjacent buildings.

The transport of non visual sensations (i.e. noise and silence) is one of the key challenges of realistic painting. The aim here is to visually trigger an emotion that would usually arouse during a noisy event or in the silence afterwards.

„140 dB“ is the title of a series of four large scale (150 x 200 cm) photorealistic  paintings. Utilising photos compositions and illumination emotionally strong situations are created that are the basis for the paintings. The idea is that fake is allowed, even desired, as long the result still passes as a photo. It is the illusion that counts.

Dr. Iris Ulbricht is an engineer and artist based in Rangsdorf and Werder (Havel). She worked in the international turbomachinery industry in different R&D and management positions in Berlin/Brandenburg, Brussels and Switzerland until 10 years ago she initiated a radical career change. She quit her job and started to study arts with a focus on traditional painting techniques and drawing in free academies and with selected artists. Since 2019 she has been teaching and exhibiting her work.

D / Urbane Stille, das ist in erster Linie eine relative Stille: Die Stille, nachdem die U-Bahn eingefahren ist, die Stille im Hinterhof, wenn alle schlafen, die Stille morgens um vier. Aber sie ist grundsätzlich eine Stille in Abwesenheit von Lärm.

Das Pojekt „140 dB“ (also 140 Dezibel, der Lautstärke eines Triebwerks in geringer Entfernung) steht in enger Verbindung zum Tempelhofer Feld, dem ehemaligen Flughafen THF, der Neukölln lange und nachhaltig geprägt hat. Denn hier fühlt sich die durchaus lebhafte Geräuschkulisse für den Berliner, der noch den ohrenbetäubenden Lärm der startenden Flugzeuge im Ohr hat, oder vielleicht sogar noch das Wackeln des Mobiliars und das Klirren der Fensterscheiben in den angrenzenden Gebäuden erlebt hat, tatsächlich sehr still an.

Nicht-visuelle Empfindungen (z.B. Lärm / Stille) visuell zu transportieren, ist eine der Kernherhausforderungen der gegenständlichen Malerei. Es geht darum darum, beim Betrachter die Emotion zu wecken, die sich einstellt, wenn man ein extrem lautes Ereignis durchsteht, bzw. die Emotion in der Stille, die sich daran anschließt.

„140 dB“ ist der Titel einer Serie von vier fotorealistischen Gemälden, alle großformatig. Auf der Basis von Fotos werden Kompositionen und Beleuchtungssituationen konstruiert.

Dr. Iris Ulbricht ist Ingenieurin und Künstlerin und lebt und arbeitet in Rangsdorf und Werder(Havel). Sie war in der internationalen Turbomaschinenindustrie tätig und hatte unterschiedliche Positionen in Berlin/Brandenburg, Brüssel und der Schweiz inne. Vor mittlerweile 10 Jahren leitete sie einen radikalen Kurswechsel ein und studierte Kunst in Eigenregie, zunächst mit einem Fokus auf akademischer Zeichnung und klassischen Maltechniken
